Hadum Mosque, Painted Motifs & Historic Stone Kullas

A field note from Enjoy Kosovo

A local perspective on Kosovo

Gjakova is celebrated for its distinctive defensive architecture. The fortified stone kulla houses protected family clans during past centuries of turmoil.

The 1594 Hadum Mosque Complex

Commissioned by Hadum Suleiman Aga, this mosque features elegant interior floral frescoes, a graceful lead-domed roof, and an ancient Islamic cemetery surrounded by wrought-iron gates.

Fortified Stone Kullas

Distinctive to western Kosovo and northern Albania, kullas are three-story stone towers with narrow slit windows (frëngji) on the lower floors and carved wooden ceilings on the guest floor (oda).

Restored Heritage in the Historic Core

Many of Gjakova's kullas have been lovingly restored as cultural museums, artist ateliers, and authentic traditional restaurants.
