Contrasting Architecture: National Library to the Newborn Monument

A field note from Enjoy Kosovo

A local perspective on Kosovo

Prishtina's cityscape tells the story of centuries of political and cultural change. Bold geometric modernism stands right beside peaceful Ottoman mosques and vibrant street murals.

The National Library: Brutalist Icon

Designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković and opened in 1982, the National Library is wrapped in 73 white acrylic domes and an intricate metal mesh lattice that captivates architects worldwide.

Newborn Monument & The Mother Teresa Boulevard

Unveiled on the day of Kosovo’s Declaration of Independence in 2008, the Newborn letters are repainted every year with meaningful themes. From there, stroll the pedestrian Mother Teresa Boulevard.

Imperial Mosque & The Old Clock Tower

At the northern end of the centre, the 1461 Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque and the 19th-century Sahat Kulla (clock tower) preserve the historic Ottoman fabric of old Prishtina.
